  4. Landing with 35 companions in North America,
  5. he called it Vinland, because he discovered
  6. grape vines growing there. The story was
  7. confirmed 1963 when a Norwegian expedition,
  8. led by Helge Ingstad, discovered remains of a
  9. Viking settlement (dated about 1000) near the
  10. fishing village of L'Anse-aux-Meadows at the
  11. northern tip of Newfoundland.
